It
is considered as one of oldest Arab air ways. It
started operation in 1947 with technical
assistance from British company (Air work) with four air
planes type De-Hanfland (DOF) with 8seats. A fifth
airplane joined the group in 1952. Sudan Airways
at that time was part of Railways Corporation
and started to operate in areas not possible for
Railways to reach. The route of operation for
Sudan Airways was to wad Medeni, Atbra, Nuhud,
AL Fasher, Genaina, El Obeid, Gembella, Melkal,
Juba, Wau, Kassalla, and Port Sudan. The
passengers were about 2-3 every trip mostly
civil servants or sick persons needing urgent
nursing. During the first year, The Sudan
Airways served about 736 passengers and
transported 1543 Kilogram of goods. In 1952 (DOF) air planes
replaced by seven Dakota with 28 seats each.
Route of opration extended to Wadi Halfa, Dougla
and Merawi.
