Sudan
comes third in African after South Africa and Egypt in the
volume of industrial activities. The total investments in
the industrial sector are estimated at 15 billion US
dollars, mostly in agro-industries, including
sugar,
textile fabrics, vegetable oil industry, tanneries, canning
factories, milk factories, in addition to agriculture
related industries such as agricultural implements,
fertilizers, chemicals, medical and veterinary products,
etc.

Sugar Industry
|
|
This is composed of Kenana Sugar Co., which is one
of the largest sugar complexes in the world (in some
43000 ha) in addition to four government owned sugar
complexes, namely Guneid, New Halfa, Sennar and
Assalaya. The annual production of sugar is about
600 thousand tons, of which 365000 tons are being
contributed by Kenana Complex. At present a new
complex is being established, the While Nile Sugar
Scheme, with a capacity of 300 thousand tons
annually. Moreover, work will be resumed in two
more complexes-Melut and Jelahak in the Southern
part of the country as soon as peace is maintained.

Wheat Mills
|
|
The design capacity of all wheat mills in the Sudan
is estimated at 1.3 million tons, just enough to
produce about 900,000 tons of flour to meet the
local demand, in addition to about 360,000 tons of
wheat bran, which is used in the animal feed
industry. |

Weaving and Textile
Industries |
|
The designed capacity of all weaving and textile
factories is estimated at 60000 tons of thread and
3.5 million yards of cloth annually. However, the
liberalization of foreign trade is posing a real
threat to the industry in addition to the smuggled
goods from neighboring countries. On the other
hand the country produces about 500,000 tons of yarn
and opportunities are available for investment in
tricot not only for local consumption, but also for
export. |

Leather Industry
|
|
The designed capacity of the existing tanneries is
estimated at 9 million pieces of light leather and
about 1,3 million pieces of patched leather. All
the tanneries are working with more than 93% of
their designed capacities satisfying the local
market and contributing about 50 million dollars
annually from the proceeds of export. Indeed the
availability of tanned leather has facilitated the
establishment of various industries for the
production of shoes, bags, straps, purses, leather
garments and various popular leather articles.

Abattoirs |
|
the scarcity
of modern abattoirs in the past was one of the main
bottlenecks that curbed the expansion of meat
exports. There were only two modern abattoirs in the
Sudan up to 1997 and they were hardly adequate to
satisfy the local demand.
However, the last 3 years have witnessed the
establishment of a number of modern abattoirs in
various parts of country including Nyala in western
Sudan and Port Sudan on the Red Sea coast.

Edible Oil and Soap
Industry |
|
There are 76 vegetable oil factories in the various
parts of the country with a total capacity of 3
million tons annually, in addition to hundreds of
oil mills all over the country, with an estimated
annual capacity of about 1.5 million tons. These
facilities helped to make the Sudan one of the
biggest exporters of sesame oil and groundnut oil to
the European Union. The availability of oil was
instrumental in the development of soap industry.
Currently the Sudan produces about 100,000 tons of
washing soap, 5000 tons of toilet soap and 5000 tons
of detergents, indicating good opportunities for
additional investments in these fields. |
