Cotton


Over 90% of Cotton in grown state managed large irrigated schemes. The remaining part is private ownership and rain grown. Management is tripartite involving government, scheme management and the tenants. Planting starts July and ends August. Planting starts December through March. Ginning commences December and ends June

 

MAJOR VARIETIES :

  •  BARAKAT (90)

  • The major Extra long Staple (ELS) variety superior in both fineness and strength. It is resistant to Blackarm disease. This variety is grown mainly in Gezira.The newly released, wilt resistant derivative Barakat (90) has displaced the long –grown Traditional Barakat in most areas. It is early maturing, high yielding cultivars and comparable to Traditional Barakat in fiber characteristics.

  • SHAMBAT-B:

  • Atop quality long staple (LS) cotton with staple length 1 3/8 –“1 ½ “ which has been bred to bridge the gap between (ELS) growths and medium Staple (MS) growths.SHAMBAT –B is finer and longer than Acala Barac (67 )B.

  • BARAC (67) B(ACALA)

  • This variety is classified as a medium Staple Cotton. Staple Length ranges 11/16”-13/16” It is known for its high resistance to Blackarm and Bacterial Blight

  • ALBAR(57) 12 AND ACRAIN

  • The coarse count cottons ALBAR(57) 12 known as (NUBA) and ACRAIN are short staple rain grown varieties. Acrain is a rain grown Acala.
